Research Interests

One of my major research interests is environmental history, especially reconstruction of past vegetation, landscape, climate and hydrological regime, on regional and local scale. In addition, my recent work, based on plant remains from archaeological sites and on- and off-site palaeoecological records, has focused on human settlement history and human impact on the environment such as agricultural practices and forest clearance. In my research, located mainly in Central Europe and in Hawai‘i, I have been applying an integrated approach of palaeoecological and archaeobotanical studies to better understand long-term co-evolutionary interactions between people and their environments. My recent areas of study include:

  • European Late Glacial and Holocene vegetation and climate history
  • beginning of agriculture in Europe
  • human ecodynamics of the Hawaiian ecosystem
  • impact of early settlers on the environment
  • ethnobotanical values of archaeobotanical remains
  • use of wood in archaeological contents
